New York Detective Police Commits Suicide in Home
New York Correspondent: An off-duty New York Police Department (NYPD) officer died by suicide inside a Middle Village home today. The 53-year-old detective took his own life at a home on 79th Street and was found by family members shortly before 1 p.m., police said.
The officer’s suicide is the first NYPD member suicide in 2020. Last year, a string of 10 officer suicides shook the city and the department. The officer reportedly hung himself inside his mother’s home.
The officer was recently placed on modified duty and has his gun taken away for an unknown reason, the news article stated. A large police presence was seen near 79th Street and 58th Avenue, in the vicinity of the officer’s mother’s home, today around 1:40 p.m. The officer’s identity was withheld pending proper family notification.
