New England BNP celebrates Ziaur Rahman’s 41st Martyrdom Anniversary in Boston

Staff Reporter: New England (Boston) BNP has organized a discussion meeting and prayer mahfil on the occasion of the 41st martyrdom anniversary of former President Ziaur Rahman, a proponent of multi-party democracy and former martyred President. Ziaur Rahman’s development and democracy was the topic of discussion at the Darul Kabab restaurant in Cambridge, adjacent to Boston, Massachusetts, on Sunday (May 29), local time.

New England (Boston) BNP Adviser Tarek Ahmed Ruben presided over the meeting and Md. Razzak Hossain performance the discussion meeting. The joint convener of the BNP Central Committee Adv. Mujibur Rahman Sarwar were special guest, former BNP MP Hasna Jasim Uddin Moudud and US convener of the Independence Golden Jubilee Committee and BNP leader Zillur Rahman Zillu.

The keynote speakers were Sohrab H Khan, Founder of New England (Boston) BNP, Mozammel Hossaini, Adviser of New England BNP, Mahmudur Rahman, Mahbubul Haque Duke, Mahbubur Rahman Apu, Professor Abdus Salam, President of Chattagram South District Jasas Shamsul Anwar Khan, Former public relations officer of Jamuna oil company Belal Uddin Ahmed, founding member of New England BNP Abul Bashar, Ashek Razzak and president of Chattagram Metropolitan Chhatra Dal Gazi Siraj among others.

At the beginning of the meeting, Professor Abdus Salam conducted recitation and prayers from the Holy Quran. Prayers were offered for the recovery of the souls of the martyred President Ziaur Rahman, Begum Khaleda Zia and all the people of the world including Tareq Rahman.
Speakers at the meeting said that after the Pakistani army attacked the Bengali people on March 25, 1971, he revolted by capturing his Pakistani commander and formed an armed resistance. On 27 March 1971, he read the Declaration of Independence on behalf of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from Kalurghat Radio Station in Chittagram.
Speakers at the meeting demanded proper treatment and release of party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and elections under a non-partisan neutral government.

Speakers strongly protested Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent remarks about the removal of Begum Khaleda Zia from the Padma Bridge, saying that the Padma Bridge was not built with anyone’s personal money but with people’s money. The speakers mentioned that such statements about the former Prime Minister from a responsible place are unacceptable.

The speakers further said that the martyred President Ziaur Rahman was one of the Sector Commander of the Liberation War and the Commander of Z Force. For his heroism in the war of liberation, the government of Bangladesh awarded him the title of Bir Uttam.

On September 1, 1978, he founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. After ruling Bangladesh for four years, he was brutally killed in a failed military coup in Chattagram on 30 May 1981.
