AI-driven propaganda and misinformation pose major challenge for election

Bangla Press Desk: Media representatives have warned that tackling artificial intelligence (AI)-driven propaganda and misinformation will be a major challenge for the Election Commission (EC) in the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election.
They expressed doubts about the EC’s ability to manage these issues and gain public trust during a dialogue held on Monday (6 October) at the EC headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, with 44 journalists participating.
Kaler Kantho editor Hasan Hafiz urged the EC to clarify its position regarding the Awami League, saying election acceptability depends on transparency. Bangladesh Pratidin editor Abu Taher cautioned the EC about manipulative officials spreading “fairy-tale” election stories. Banglanews24.com editor Touhidul Islam Mintu noted that political power dictates the EC’s authority, while Prothom Alo’s Sajjad Sharif and The Daily Star’s Ziaul Haque emphasized the need for public trust and journalist safety.
Other speakers recommended publishing candidates’ affidavits online and ensuring media freedom. Independent TV’s Mostafa Akmal highlighted AI-generated fake content as a growing threat.
Election Commissioner Brig. Gen. (Retd.) Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah acknowledged that AI misuse and misinformation are global problems, while Chief Election Commissioner A. M. M. Nasir Uddin pledged to conduct a “transparent, mirror-clear” election with full media cooperation.
