Another body recovered at Tuptup Resort; 10 bodies handed over to relatives

Bangla Press Desk: Another body has been recovered from the wooden 'TupTup Resort' at Patuartek Beach in Ukhia, Cox's Bazar, following a fire that occurred a few days ago.

On Tuesday (October 27) afternoon, during a search operation by the Fire Service and the police, the body was discovered on the cornice of the resort's second floor. Police believe it may be the remains of Nasrin Akter Mukta, a school teacher who had been reported missing since the fire.

Atikur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhia Police Station, stated that the resort was searched again today in an effort to locate Nasrin Akter, who had gone missing during the blaze. A body was recovered during this search. Whether or not it is Nasrin Akter will be confirmed through DNA testing.

Nasrin Akter was a teacher at Swapnabilas Niribili School in Ashulia, Savar. She had traveled to Cox's Bazar with two friends. Her husband, Dewan Faisal, is a former vice-president of the Dhaka District unit of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

Following the fire at TupTup Resort, the police initiated DNA testing to identify the 10 bodies recovered earlier. Samples were collected from the remains and sent to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) laboratory in Dhaka. Once the identities of the victims were confirmed through DNA analysis, the bodies were handed over to their respective families by the Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital authorities.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Rimon Ghosh of Ukhia Police Station, the investigating officer for the case, noted that the 10 identified victims belonged to two families—six from one family and four from the other. Both families resided in Dhaka.

According to police information, the six victims from one family are: Moulita Mehzabin (19), Laila Jahan (25), Israt Jahan (27), Faria Kabir (33), Faria’s six-year-old son Mohammad Faizan Noor, and Faria’s brother Mohammad Nafis Tehami (24). They resided in the Banasree and Khilgaon areas of Dhaka.

The victims from the other family included Mohammad Nahidur Rahman (41)—an official at Grand Power Limited in Shyamoli, Dhaka—his wife Afsana Matin (36), and their two daughters, Rozaina Inaya (9) and Munaina Ihana (6).

Aminul Islam Khan, from the Khilgaon-Mugda area of Dhaka, received the bodies of the six victims. Among them were four of his nieces, one nephew, and one grandson.

After receiving the bodies, Aminul Islam Khan stated, "The administration has handed over the bodies of six members of our family and four members of another family from Jashore. We are now on our way home with the bodies."

He added, "We have recovered the bodies of our loved ones after 10 days. We demand justice for this incident. Those whose negligence and carelessness led to such a major tragedy must be brought to justice."

The bodies of the four victims from the other family were received by Zahidur Rahman—the elder brother of Nahidur Rahman—from Mohanpur village in the Monirampur Upazila of Jashore.

Officials from the administration, including Cox's Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md. Abdul Mannan and Superintendent of Police Sajedur Rahman, were present during the handover of the bodies.

The Deputy Commissioner stated that the identity of the body recovered most recently would also be determined soon, after which it will be handed over to the relatives.

Superintendent of Police Sajedur Rahman noted that the investigation into the fire at the resort is ongoing, and police operations to apprehend the suspects are underway. He added that if any police officer is found to have been negligent in the line of duty, legal action will be taken against them.

On the morning of October 17, a devastating fire broke out at the Tuptup Restaurant and Resort on Patuartek Beach in Ukhiya, claiming the lives of 10 people. The bodies were so severely charred that immediate identification was impossible; their identities were later confirmed through DNA testing.
