Bangladesh finish sixth after big defeat to Japan
Bangla Press Desk:   Bangladesh ended their Asia Cup Hockey campaign in sixth place after going down 6-1 to Japan in the fifth-place playoff on Sunday at Bihar Sports University Hockey Stadium in Rajgir, India. The defeat means Japan secured fifth position and direct entry into the World Cup Qualifiers, while Bangladesh must now face Pakistan in a three-match playoff series to stay in contention. Bangladesh started well against Japan, winning three penalty corners in the opening minutes, but failed to convert their chances. Japan made no such mistake, scoring twice in the first quarter through Ryosuke Shinohara and Koji Yamasaki. Although Bangladesh held firm in the second quarter, Japan struck twice in quick succession in the third and added a fifth early in the final quarter. Amirul Islam scored a consolation goal for Bangladesh, but Japan restored their dominance moments later to finish with a 6-1 win.
This is the second consecutive Asia Cup where Bangladesh have finished sixth, repeating their result from the last edition. Their only higher achievement in the competition remains a fifth-place finish in 1982 – the only time in history. Since Pakistan withdrew from this Asia Cup due to political reasons, the Asian Hockey Federation created a playoff system where the sixth-placed side must face Pakistan. The winner will then advance to the World Cup qualifiers alongside the Asia Cup’s top four and Japan. Bangladesh, ranked 29th in the world, will now pin their hopes on overcoming 14th ranked Pakistan to extend their journey toward the World Cup. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
