Bangladesh High Court halts BCB President’s councillor letter ahead of election
Bangla Press Desk: The High Court on Monday temporarily blocked the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president’s letter directing district and divisional sports associations to nominate councillors exclusively from ad-hoc committees for the upcoming board election. The court issued a 15-day stay on the letter and set a 10-day deadline for government and BCB authorities to explain why the directive should not be declared illegal. The order came from a bench comprising Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Bishwajit Debnath, following a writ petition challenging the legality of the letter issued on 18 September. Four petitioners from Tangail, Lakshmipur, Gopalganj, and Rajbari had filed the case, seeking a stay on the letter, which required regional associations that had nominated councillors from outside the ad-hoc committees to resubmit their nominations.
BCB election is scheduled for 6 October. Ahead of the polls, the National Sports Council had instructed associations to nominate councillors by 17 September, specifying that only members from ad-hoc committees could be nominated. The deadline was later extended twice as some associations did not comply. The draft list of councillors is expected to be released later Monday evening.
