Bangladesh Lose Opening Match of ODI Series
Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh women’s team have been unable to break their losing streak. Including warm-up matches, Nigar Sultana Joty and her teammates have now suffered defeats in all four matches played so far.
Their seven-wicket loss to Australia has extended that run.
The defeat means Bangladesh have started the three-match ODI series on a losing note. Australia chased down Bangladesh’s target of 167 with 146 balls to spare, losing just three wickets in the process.
Bangladesh needed a strong start with the ball to restrict Australia to a low total, but they failed to make an early impact. Although Bangladesh claimed their first wicket at 30, Phoebe Litchfield took control of the chase and went on to score a half-century. Her opening partner, Georgia Voll, was dismissed for 19.
Litchfield could not stay until the end, departing for 77 as Australia’s second wicket. Her innings came at a strike rate of 135.08 and included 10 fours and a six.
Beth Mooney fell soon after for 13, but Ellyse Perry and Annabel Sutherland completed the remaining work for Australia. Perry remained unbeaten on 26, while Sutherland finished on 25 not out.
For Bangladesh, 17-year-old Habiba Islam Pinky, making her ODI debut, claimed the most wickets, taking two.
Earlier, Bangladesh were bowled out for 166 after being put in to bat in Brisbane. Their innings got off to a disastrous start when Fargana Haque was dismissed for a duck off the first ball. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.
Ritu Moni helped Bangladesh cross the 150-run mark, scoring a team-high 45 after coming in at number seven. Captain Nigar Sultana Joty was the second-highest scorer with 29.
Sutherland was Australia’s leading wicket-taker, claiming four wickets. Her all-round performance earned her the Player of the Match award.
