Bangladesh needs $30b in climate funds, but struggles to get $1-$2b from IMF: Adviser
Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh needs $30 billion annually to tackle climate change impact, but bringing just $1-$2 billion from the IMF feels like an exhausting struggle, said Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed on Monday. Negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for securing $5 billion will begin soon, he added when speaking at the inauguration of a training session titled “Navigating Climate Finance: Media Reporting” held at PKSF auditorium in Agargaon, Dhaka. The Economic Relations Division and Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) jointly organised the event. The adviser said Bangladesh is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change due to its geography, frequent natural disasters, and large populations living on the margins in areas like Patuakhali and Shyamnagar. Most of the crises here are man-made, he noted, adding that globally “we talk endlessly about climate change, but act too little.”
Against this omnipresent lethargy, Bangladesh stands as a crucial example of resilience and community-driven response, Salehuddin said. Praising the resilience of general people, he said, “local people respond to disasters with their own efforts. This is a positive side. If anyone waits for fire service teams from Dhaka to arrive, it will never work.” However, general people cannot alone fight climate change in the long run, and essentially requires support from scientists, policy makers, institutions, and finances, the adviser noted. He also emphasised the role of journalists, urging them to raise awareness through their reporting on climate change.
He said Bangladesh must turn climate pledges into action, warning that delays would endanger future generations. “We talk endlessly, but real work remains limited. Many countries pledge billions, yet very little reaches where it’s needed,” he said. There is a global alliance named V-20 comprising representatives from many countries and donor agencies. But it lacks seriousness, the adviser alleged. Citing Japan, he mentioned how schoolchildren there are trained in disaster preparedness from an early age, adding that Bangladeshi children too should be made aware from a young age about climate change and disaster preparation.
