Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh did not get off to a good start in their opening match of the ASEAN Cup, trailing 2-0 against Malaysia at halftime.
Arif Ayman scored both goals for Malaysia.
Shortly after the match kicked off at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia, the likes of Hamza Choudhury and Tariq Kazi found themselves busy fending off wave after wave of attacks. They conceded a goal in the 18th minute, with Arif Ayman putting Malaysia in the lead.
The Malaysian forward found the back of the net by shooting the ball between goalkeeper Mehdi Hasan Srabon's legs from inside the penalty area on the right flank.
Ayman delighted Malaysia again in the 38th minute. He capitalized on a situation where Shakil Ahad Topu attempted to control the ball near the penalty area instead of clearing it; Ayman won possession and easily beat the Bangladeshi goalkeeper.
Bangladesh could have conceded another goal before the break, but goalkeeper Srabon made a brilliant save in the 44th minute. In contrast, Bangladesh failed to register a single shot on Malaysia's goal during the first half.
Earlier today, Farhan Ali Wahid made his national team debut, though regular captain Jamal Bhuyan did not make the squad.
In their ten previous encounters, Bangladesh has won only once, while Malaysia has secured seven victories; the remaining two matches ended in draws.
