Bangla Press Desk: A team of young Bangladeshi students won four medals, including the country’s first-ever gold, at the 4th Open World Astronomy Olympiad held in Sochi, Russia.
Competing against 90 participants from 20 countries, the six-member Bangladeshi delegation showcased remarkable scientific talent and intellectual prowess.
Md Makhdum Amin Fahim, a 10th-grade student of Jessore Police Lines Secondary School, made history by securing the gold medal.
Saptarshi Rahman from HEED International School and Md Radit Raiyan from Adamjee Cantonment College earned silver medals, while Md. Jubair Hossain Jisan of Rajshahi Collegiate School took home bronze.
Sayantan Roy from South Herald English School, Khulna, received an Honorable Mention.
The Olympiad, organised by the Russian Ministry of Education and the Sirius Education Center, tested participants through challenging theoretical, observational, and data analysis rounds — assessing not only their technical expertise but also creativity and problem-solving skills.
For Bangladesh, a developing nation with limited scientific infrastructure, this achievement goes far beyond medals. It symbolises the growing potential of its young minds in global scientific competition and highlights the importance of nurturing critical thinking over rote learning.
Experts say this victory reflects the rising interest in STEM education and the need for continued investment in science Olympiads, research clubs, and mentorship programs. It also serves as a call for policymakers to support initiatives that encourage scientific curiosity and innovation among students.
Reflecting on his win, gold medalist Fahim said, “When I looked at the night sky over Sochi, I felt that we, too, can reach the stars — if we just keep looking up.”
The triumph in Sochi stands as a proud moment for Bangladesh, proving that when talent meets opportunity, even young astronomers from a small South Asian nation can shine among the stars.
