Bangla Press Desk: A total of eight men, including three of Bangladeshi origin, have been formally charged in connection with a horrific child sexual abuse and gang rape incident in Wales, UK.
Gwent Police in South Wales arrested the eight men on Tuesday (July 14) after a long and complex investigation in Newport, Swansea, London, Birmingham, Lancashire, Edinburgh and Argyll and Bute in Scotland.
The gang has been charged with 34 specific offences under the special operation, called ‘Operation Oak’, of which 17 were rapes.
According to court documents and investigative sources, several women who were sexually abused as children between 1985 and 1996 recently made these allegations. The accused are now aged between 54 and 73 and are all British citizens.
However, analyzing the names and identities of the accused, it is seen that among them are three Bangladeshi-origin citizens named Mohammad Sheikh Abdul Hannan, Sheikh Mohammad Tahir Ullah and Aminur Rahman Chowdhury.
Among the accused, Shafaq Mohammad (58) of Birmingham has been charged with a total of 11 crimes, including rape of a woman under the age of 11 and over the age of 16. In addition, Mohammad Sheikh Abdul Hannan (54) of Edinburgh has been charged with eight charges, including rape and conspiracy to rape, and Shakil Babur (58) of Lancashire has been charged with four charges of indecent assault of a child under the age of 16.
On the other hand, Syed Mohammad Ashan Taqvi (65) of Newport and Murad Ali (57) of Swansea have been charged with rape of a minor child. Sheikh Mohammad Tahir Ullah (73) from Newport has been charged with two counts of rape and Aminur Rahman Chowdhury (58) from Tottenham with one count of rape. Kevin Lawrence (54) from Scotland has been charged with three counts of conspiracy to commit rape and three counts of forcing prostitution.
Chief Crown Prosecutor for Wales Jenny Hopkins said prosecutors had gathered enough evidence to bring the case to court and ensure the prosecution of criminal proceedings in the public interest. She also reminded that legal proceedings against the defendants were ongoing and that they had every right to a fair trial.
The eight defendants are due to appear at Newport Magistrates' Court on 24 July. Source: BBC.
