Committed to ensuring impartial duty during national election: Public admin secy

Bangla Press Desk: Newly appointed Public Administration Senior Secretary Md Ehsanul Hoque has pledged to ensure that field administration officers carry out their duties fairly in the upcoming national parliamentary elections.
He made the commitment on Sunday afternoon while talking to reporters after formally assuming office.
Ehsanul Hoque, who previously served on a contractual basis as senior secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division, was appointed Senior Secretary of the Public Administration Ministry earlier in the day.
When asked whether managing the field administration during the national election would be challenging, he said, “Our Chief Adviser has clearly instructed that this election must be fair.
“During the election period, we will work under the authority of the Election Commission. I believe those currently serving in the field-level administration will carry out their responsibilities with utmost neutrality. It is my responsibility to ensure that, and I accept it.”
On the possibility of changes in the posts of Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) ahead of the polls, he said, “This is a matter that requires consultation with policymakers. I cannot comment on it at this point.”
Responding to questions about criticism over the administration’s role in previous elections and punitive actions taken against some officials, Ehsanul said, “If we are given the opportunity, I firmly believe we can deliver a truly impartial election. That opportunity must be ensured by all of you. With your support, I am confident my officials will perform their duties with complete neutrality.”
“I believe maintaining law and order during the election is not a major issue. If the people demand a neutral election, it is certainly possible. We want to ensure that officials on election duty remain above all forms of controversy,” he added.
Regarding his role in bringing reforms to the public administration, the secretary said, “We will reach decisions through discussion. It is too early to comment on that. If my officers are provided with the right environment and protection, they will be able to conduct a neutral election.”
Explaining what kind of protection is needed, he said, “Protection means they must be allowed to work independently. If any official fails to conduct the election neutrally, we will take immediate action. Any official found to have political affiliations will be removed from election duties.”
“I have never worked under political directives, and I never will,” he asserted.
Referring to a directive from the Chief Adviser, he added, “Presiding officers will be empowered. If they fail to exercise their authority, they will be held accountable. That is the message we have received. In case of any disturbance, the polling centre will be shut down.”
