Contempt of Court rule issued against CEC
Bangla Press Desk: The High Court has issued a rule asking why punitive action should not be taken against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin for disobeying a court order.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Asif Hassan issued the rule on Sunday (25 January).
The Chief Election Commissioner has been directed to respond to the rule within the next four weeks. Advocate Yunus Ali Akhand represented the petitioner during the hearing.
Following the hearing, Advocate Yunus Ali Akhand said, “On 27 August last year, the High Court directed the Chief Election Commissioner to dispose of an application regarding the registration of a political party. However, the CEC failed to implement that court order. Consequently, a contempt of court petition was filed against him in the High Court.”
Earlier, Advocate Yunus Ali Akhand had applied to the CEC for the registration of a political party named ‘Krishak Sramik Janata Party’. He moved to court after the application remained unresolved.
