Court orders release of woman detained for paying 1971 tributes on behalf of AL
Bangla Press Desk: A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered the release of Tahmina Akter, a mother of three, who was arrested while trying to pay tributes at the National Martyrs' Memorial on behalf of the Awami League (AL).
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Afroza Sultana passed the order after a hearing.
Earlier in the day, Sub-Inspector Abdul Muktalib of Detective Branch (DB) of police submitted a report stating that no allegations were found against Tahmina Akter.
Tahmina was detained around 11:30am on 26 March from in front of the memorial’s fountain for taking a pro-Awami League stance, while she was accompanied by her three children. The following day, she was sent to jail.
At the time of her detention, she was visiting the National Memorial to pay tributes there on behalf of ousted premier Sheikh Hasina and Awami League.
At the time, Tahmina was carrying an Awami League leaflet, and also chanted pro-AL slogans like: “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.”
Hearing the slogans, police detained her.
Later, in police custody, she reportedly told journalists that she was a grassroots activist of the now banned political party.
In a petition requesting reprieve for her, Police Sub-Inspector Abdul Mottalib told the court that an “unidentified person involved in Awami League politics” misled and manipulated Tahmina into paying tributes on behalf of the banned party and chanting supportive slogans.
The alleged person wished to spread photos of the incident on social media as part of a pro-AL campaign.
Tahmina was unaware of the current political realities of the country, and obliged with innocent faith.
However, she was not involved with any political party. Nor was she involved in any subversive or seditious act, the police said in the petition.
