Date for verdict in Rohingya genocide case to be announced on November 19
BanglaPress Desk: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to deliver its ruling on November 19 in the case filed against Myanmar, which accuses the country of committing genocide against the Rohingya population. According to Reuters, the court announced this decision on Tuesday (November 3).
The proceedings will commence at 10:00 AM (local time) at the Peace Palace—the seat of the ICJ in The Hague, Netherlands—where the judges will deliver their ruling.
The case was filed against Myanmar in 2019 by The Gambia, a West African nation. The complaint alleges that the military operations conducted by Myanmar in Rakhine State in 2017, which targeted the Rohingya, amounted to genocide. Following these operations, at least 730,000 Rohingya were forced to flee to Bangladesh to escape for their lives.
A report by a United Nations fact-finding commission indicated that acts of genocide had taken place during these operations. Myanmar, however, has consistently denied these allegations, claiming that the military operations were conducted lawfully with the objective of suppressing terrorist activities.
The ICJ’s ruling could have significant implications—not only for the resolution of the case against Myanmar but also for broader international legal proceedings concerning allegations of genocide.
In particular, the ruling may hold legal significance for the case filed by South Africa in 2023, which accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza—an allegation that Israel has also denied.
