Bangla Press Desk: A depression in western Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression and advanced northwards towards the West Bengal coast, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has said.
It is expected to intensify further and make landfall on the West Bengal coast early Friday, Indian meteorologists have said, warning of floods in Kolkata and other districts.
In Bangladesh, heavy rains are expected by Thursday noon in eight riverside districts: Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar.
Earlier, flashfloods were forecast in seven districts Feni, Chattogram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Sherpur, Netrakona and Mymensingh.
On Wednesday, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) warned that water levels in the Gomti, Muhuri, Selonia and Feni rivers in Chattogram division rose over the preceding 24 hours and were expected to keep rising over the next three days.
Cautionary Signal No 3 has been hoisted at all the four seaports: Chattogram, Payra, Monga and the under-construction Matarbari port in Cox’s Bazar. Fishing boats and trawlers have been advised to remain close to the shores so that they can safely return to land in the event of dangerous tidal surges.
In West Bengal, authorities have imposed complete restrictions on seafaring until 4 October.
