DU climbs 200 places in Times Higher Education ranking

Bangla Press Desk:   Dhaka University (DU), the country’s premier institution of higher education, has made remarkable progress in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, moving up 200 places to secure a position in the 801–1000 range.

Last year, DU was placed in the 1001–1200 category.

The rankings, published by the UK-based education magazine Times Higher Education on Wednesday (8 Oct), evaluated a total of 3,118 universities worldwide this year, and DU has once again maintained its position as Bangladesh’s top-ranked university in the global index.

According to data released on the official THE website, DU’s impressive improvement stems from significant advancements across key performance indicators.

The university’s research environment index increased by 3 points (from 10.3 to 13.3), research quality rose by 9.3 points (from 67.2 to 76.5), and industry collaboration saw an 11.8-point jump (from 21.4 to 33.2).

DU’s education index currently stands at 17.7, while its international outlook is 45.

Experts says that these combined improvements in education, research quality, industry engagement, and internationalisation have contributed substantially to the university’s higher global standing.

A 16-member special committee has been working over the past few years to elevate Dhaka University’s position in international rankings.

The committee operates under the overall guidance of Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan, with Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof Mamun Ahmed serving as convener.

Other members include Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Sayema Haque Bidisha, Treasurer Prof M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Dean of the Faculty of Science Professor Abdus Salam, Director of the Institute of Information Technology Professor BM Mainul Hossain, and Director of the ICT Cell Professor Mosaddek Hossain Kamal, among others.

The committee has implemented several initiatives aimed at boosting research output, strengthening ties with industry, enhancing international collaboration, and improving the overall quality of education at the university.

Congratulating teachers, students, and staff on this achievement, Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan said, “Dhaka University is maintaining its tradition and excellence in both the national and international arena. We are continuously working to further enhance the quality of education and research.”

It is also notable that Dhaka University retained its status as Bangladesh’s best university in the global ranking published by the UK-based education and research organisation Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), where it was placed 584th in the latest QS World University Rankings.
