EC Suspends NCP Leader Monira Sharmin’s Candidacy for Reserved Seat
Bangla Press Desk: The Election Commission (EC) has suspended the candidacy of Monira Sharmin, joint convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), for the reserved women's seat in the National Parliament until 12pm tomorrow.
Within this timeframe, she must submit the necessary evidence of her resignation from government service to the EC.
The Election Commission (EC) announced this decision following the scrutiny of nomination papers for the reserved women's seats at the Election Bhaban auditorium in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Wednesday.
On the first day of the nomination scrutiny process, the papers of 13 candidates from 11 parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami and the NCP, were reviewed and 12 candidates were declared preliminarily valid.
Following the scrutiny of nomination papers, Returning Officer and
EC Joint Secretary Moin Uddin Khan said that, "The documents submitted by Monira Sharmin mention a government pay scale. For this reason, she has been asked to provide a defense."
According to the Representation of the People Order (RPO), there is no provision to contest or hold the position of a member of parliament within three years of leaving government service. NCP leader Monira joined Bangladesh Krishi Bank as an Officer (General) in October 2023. After serving for about a year, she resigned from the job in December 2025.
Monira’s statement on this matter could not be obtained immediately.
The date for filing appeals regarding nominations for reserved seats at the Election Commission (EC) has been set for 26 April. The appeals will be resolved on 27-28 April.
