Noman Sabit: Bangladeshi expatriates across all 50 states of the United States celebrated the holy Eid al-Adha on the same day. On Wednesday, May 27, Muslims from various communities across the country participated in Eid prayers organized by more than 3,000 mosques and Islamic centers nationwide.

The Eid congregations were held not only in open fields, but also inside mosques and church halls across the United States.

According to the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies, the number of mosques and Islamic educational institutions in the United States has increased by 33 percent over the past two decades. The number of mosques in the U.S. stood at 1,209 in 2000, rose to 2,106 in 2011, and reached 2,796 in the latest 2020 survey.

Among the states, New York has the highest number of mosques with 343, followed by California with 304, Texas with 224, Florida with 157, Illinois with 109, and New Jersey with 141 mosques.

On Friday, Eid congregations were held at Bangladeshi-managed mosques, mosque grounds, parks, and church halls in various states. In areas without mosques, church halls have long been used for Friday prayers and Eid congregations.

More than 200 mosques and adjoining grounds operated by Bangladeshi communities across the United States organized Eid prayers. Congregations began around 8 a.m. and continued in phases until approximately 9:30 a.m. Local authorities also implemented special security measures for the Eid gatherings.

One of New York’s largest Eid congregations was held at the Jamaica Muslim Center. Eid prayers were also conducted at mosques and adjacent grounds in Jamaica, Jackson Heights, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Ozone Park, Astoria, Manhattan, and nearly every major Bangladeshi-populated neighborhood in New York City.

Meanwhile, Eid congregations were also reported in mosques, Islamic centers, and more than 150 open grounds across heavily Bangladeshi-populated states including Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C, Virginia, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Ohio, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, South Carolina, Washington and Kentucky.
