MUNA's Annual Convention Suspended in U.S. This Year

Noman Sabit: The annual convention of the Muslim Ummah of North America (MUNA), one of the most prominent gatherings of the Bangladeshi Muslim community in the United States, has been suspended for this year.

This marks the first interruption after the convention had been held consecutively for eight years. Organizers have announced that the 9th Annual MUNA Convention will return as scheduled in 2027.

The decision was confirmed by Anisur Rahman Gazi, MUNA's National Media Director.

For the past seven consecutive years, the convention has been held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in downtown Philadelphia. Gazi said organizers are exploring the possibility of hosting next year's convention in another U.S. state if a suitable venue becomes available.

He explained that organizing the annual convention requires hundreds of volunteers to work tirelessly for nearly an entire year. The decision to suspend this year's event was made in recognition of their dedication and the physical and mental demands placed on them.

According to Gazi, the decision was approved during a meeting of MUNA's Majlis-e-Shura in June.

Speaking with Bangla Press, Gazi described MUNA as a religious outreach and social organization established to seek the pleasure of Allah through efforts aimed at improving the moral, spiritual and social well-being of individuals and communities.

He noted that MUNA was incorporated in the State of New York in 1990 and currently operates in more than 48 U.S. states.

Gazi emphasized that MUNA is not a political organization.

"We invite both Muslims and non-Muslims to the teachings of the Holy Qur'an," he said. "Our five-point mission is not intended only for Muslims or followers of Islam; it is designed for the betterment and advancement of all humanity."

He added that MUNA adheres completely to the teachings of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, and that each annual convention is organized around a central theme inspired by the organization's mission of spreading the guidance of the Qur'an and the example of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Gazi also called on imams, community leaders and members of the broader community to continue supporting MUNA's efforts to promote moral values, Islamic education and constructive community engagement across the United States.
