Bangla Press Desk: OTT platform Netflix has announced that it has secured the broadcasting rights for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, marking the beginning of a new chapter in sports broadcasting.
The platform will live-stream all 104 matches of the tournament, which is being jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco to celebrate the World Cup's centenary. Additionally, viewers will be able to watch the special opening matches hosted in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay live.
Netflix's coverage will extend beyond just showing the matches; it will include live analysis, pre-match specials, daily highlights, and content tailored for local football fans.
Under the terms of the agreement, one match will be broadcast for free on each matchday. Furthermore, the two semi-finals, the final, and all matches featuring the Spanish national team will be aired on a free-to-air television network in Spain.
Highlighting the significance of the deal, Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria stated that events like the World Cup possess an extraordinary ability to unite people. Having been present in the stadium when Spain won the title, she witnessed the emotions, excitement, and pride of the country's fans firsthand. In her view, such memories and stories become part of a nation's culture and endure for generations.
FIFA General Secretary Mattias Grafström also welcomed the initiative, noting that the 2030 World Cup promises to be a special edition in football history. FIFA is eager to collaborate with Netflix to bring the tournament to the vast number of football fans in Spain and Andorra, with the ultimate goal of bringing football closer to the supporters.
