Former police officer accused in stabbing death of a woman in New York

Minara Helen: A suspect has been charged in connection with the death of 28-year-old Katie Suarez, who was fatally stabbed in the neck while out for a run in Brooklyn, New York. The attack took place on October 30.
According to a statement from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) obtained by *People* magazine, 27-year-old Sayed Mohasib was arrested on Saturday, November 7. He has been charged with murder, tampering with evidence, and illegal possession of a weapon.
As reported by NBC News, investigators identified Mohasib as a suspect after reviewing surveillance camera footage from the vicinity of the attack.
The news outlet further reported that Mohasib was allegedly seen disposing of a trash bag near his home on the night of the murder.
Citing police sources, NBC News and ABC7 reported that Mohasib told authorities he did not recall attacking Suarez, though he later discovered himself covered in blood. It is currently unclear whether Mohasib has legal representation.
According to NBC News, ABC7, and the *New York Post*, Mohasib most recently worked as a support staff member at an elementary school in Brooklyn.
In a report by the *Post*, a student at the school noted that Mohasib’s behavior had seemed somewhat unusual during the week of the alleged murder.
"He was acting a bit—I don’t know how to put it—strange," the student said. "It felt a little off."
Two other students claimed to have observed Mohasib talking to himself; one of them told the *Post* that he appeared "disturbed and anxious."
A representative for the New York City Department of Education confirmed to *People* that Mohasib was an employee of the department, though the representative did not specify his exact role.
In a statement provided to *People*, the representative said, "The safety of our students is our top priority." "We have placed the individual on administrative leave and will take steps to terminate his employment, pending the outcome of the case. We are providing full cooperation to the NYPD in their investigation."
The representative added that the department is offering necessary support and services to the school’s students, staff, and other affected individuals.
Citing NBC News and ABC7, a police source familiar with his employment history stated that Mohasib worked for the NYPD in 2022. However, after serving for about a month, he requested a transfer to join the military. According to the source, he was later discharged from military service due to mental health concerns.
The source further noted that in January 2023, Mohasib applied to rejoin the NYPD, but his application was denied.
According to the NYPD, Suarez was stabbed twice in the neck while jogging along a waterfront path on Shore Parkway in Brooklyn at approximately 8:15 p.m. local time.
He was transported to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn, but passed away three days later as a result of his injuries.
According to the New York Daily News and the New York Post, Suarez—a TD Bank teller and Brooklyn College graduate—had planned to meet his parents that evening after finishing his run.
His parents became concerned when he failed to arrive at the designated location and did not answer his phone.
As reported by the Daily News, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny stated, "He was a man dedicated to his family and his work—a hardworking, wonderful member of the community. Tragically, this horrific incident befell him. At this stage, it appears to be a random attack; there is no reason to believe anyone else would have known he would be jogging in that specific location at that time."
