Staff Reporter: USA state of Georgia is counting votes after the runoff election for two Senate seats on Tuesday (January 5th). Democrats and Republicans are fighting hard in both seats. Republican nominees Senator David Perdue and Senator Kelly Loeffler are ahead until 10 p.m., local time, CNN reported. Voting for the runoff election, which began at 7a.m. on Tuesday, ended at 7p.m.
Republican Senator David Perdue has been challenged by Democrat Jon Ossof, a documentary film producer, while Republican Sen. KellyLoeffler, one of the country's richest legislators, is up against Democrat Reverend Raphael Warnock Baptist pastor. A poll the day before the election found that two Democrat candidates were slightly ahead. None of the four candidates won a majority in last November's election
This runoff selection is needed.
So far Republicans have won 50 seats and Democrats 48 in the 100-seat Senate. If Republicans win a Senate seat, they will have a majority in the Senate, and Republicans could be a shield against Biden's proposal when he takes office on January 20. On the other hand, if the Democrats win both seats, both parties will have 50-50 equal seats, in which case newly elected Vice President Kamala Harris, who will preside over the Senate, will be able to validate Biden's proposal with his vote.
