ICT verdict in Chankharpul crimes against humanity case today

Bangla Press Desk: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 is scheduled to pronounce its judgment today in a case filed over crimes against humanity committed in the city's Chankharpul area on 5 August 2024, when six people were brutally killed.

ICT Prosecutor Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim said the judgment will be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV) and on the verified Facebook page of "Office of the Chief Prosecutor, International Crimes Tribunal, Bangladesh".  

The tribunal was earlier set to pronounce the judgment on 20 January, but later rescheduled the date to 26 January as the verdict could not be readied within the scheduled time.

The accused in the case are: former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Habibur Rahman, former DMP joint commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former additional deputy commissioner Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam, former assistant commissioner of DMP's Ramna zone Mohammad Imrul, former inspector Md Arshad Hossain, constables Md Sujon, Imaj Hossain Emon, and Nasirul Islam.

The first four accused are yet to be arrested and are being tried in absentia.

The prosecution filed the formal charge against all eight accused on 25 May 2025, marking the first formal charge filed at the ICT in cases arising from the July-August mass uprising.

The six victims-Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Zunayed, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawlader, Md Ismamul Haque, and Manik Miah-were killed in Chankharpul on 5 August 2024.

The tribunal's investigation agency submitted a 90-page probe report on 20 April 2025.
