Litton Shatters a Record That Stood for 22 Years
Bangla Press Desk: Litton Das has set a new national record in the ongoing Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi by recording the most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in a single Test for Bangladesh. His tally has now reached eight.
The previous record belonged to former Bangladesh captain and wicketkeeper Khaled Mashud Pilot, who recorded seven dismissals against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2004. Litton broke the 22-year-old record.
Litton took four catches and completed one stumping in Afghanistan’s first innings. He added three more catches early in the second innings, taking his total dismissals in the match to eight.
Bangladesh have set Afghanistan a daunting target of 479 runs. Afghanistan are still batting, giving Litton an opportunity to increase his tally further.
He now has a world record in his sights. The record for the most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in a single Test stands at 11, jointly held by three players: England’s Jack Russell, South Africa’s AB de Villiers and India’s Rishabh Pant.
Russell achieved the feat against South Africa in 1995, de Villiers against Pakistan in 2013, and Pant against Australia in 2018. Litton now has a chance to surpass their record as well.
Litton has also enjoyed an outstanding performance with the bat in this Test. After scoring a half-century in the first innings, he struck an impressive century in the second.
He also became the fifth Bangladeshi batter to reach 9,000 international runs, before moving ahead of legendary batter Mohammad Ashraful on the list of century-makers.
Now, on the final day, Litton stands on the brink of a potential world record.
