Mithu hails Salma’s appointment as ‘revolutionary’
Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Media Committee Chairman Iftikhar Rahman Mithu has described the inclusion of Salma Khatun in the women’s team selection panel as a “revolutionary decision,” calling it a landmark moment for women’s cricket in the country. The former Bangladesh captain and all-rounder was officially added to the panel during a board meeting on Saturday, becoming the first woman to take up such a role. She will work alongside Sazzad Ahmed, who had been serving as the sole selector for the women’s side. Speaking to reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Mithu underlined the significance of Salma’s appointment. “We had a short meeting where we made four to five key decisions. One of them was the appointment of Salma Khatun as the first-ever woman selector for our women’s national team. She will be working alongside Shipon (Sazzad Ahmed), who currently serves as the chief selector for the women’s side,” he said. Mithu highlighted Salma’s achievements as proof of her credibility for the role. “You all know Salma was named ICC’s best bowler and top all-rounder back in 2014–15. She captained Bangladesh and has been a pillar of women’s cricket in the country. I think this is a revolutionary decision by our president, as having someone like Salma involved will provide great support for women’s cricket. This is the first time such an appointment has been made in Bangladesh,” he added.
One of Bangladesh’s most decorated cricketers, Salma played 46 ODIs and 95 T20Is between 2011 and 2023, scoring more than 1,100 international runs and taking 136 wickets across formats. She rose to No.1 in the ICC T20I bowling rankings in 2014 and reached No.2 among all-rounders a year later. Salma also led Bangladesh in their historic 2018 Women’s Asia Cup triumph, a moment that remains a milestone in the nation’s cricketing journey.  This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
