Despite falling behind by two goals, Santos did not give up. After coming onto the pitch following the break, Neymar Jr. rescued his team from certain defeat by scoring two goals from penalties within a span of just six minutes.
Thanks to his brilliance, Santos managed a 2-2 draw against Flamengo, the leaders of the Brazilian league.
The two teams faced off in a Brazilian League Round 29 match at Santos' home ground, Vila Belmiro, early this morning (October 9, Bangladesh time). Flamengo dominated the first half.
After Danilo opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, Lucas Paquetá doubled the lead during stoppage time.
Consequently, the visitors held a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Neymar took the field for Santos at the start of the second half. Returning to action after a five-week injury layoff, the Brazilian star turned the team's fortunes around.
Neymar reduced the deficit by scoring from a penalty in the 82nd minute.
Then, in the 88th minute, he scored his second goal—also from a penalty—to level the match for Santos.The second penalty incident further increased the pressure on Flamengo's defense. Earlier, Jorginho had been sent off following a VAR review of the first penalty incident, forcing Flamengo to play the closing stages of the match with ten men.
After equalizing, Santos pushed for a victory.
However, they fell short when a shot from Gabriel Bontempo struck the crossbar and rebounded.
Despite sharing the points in this draw, Flamengo retained the top spot in the league. Meanwhile, Neymar’s brilliant performance upon his return from injury secured a crucial point for Santos.
After the match, Neymar said, "Playing against Flamengo is always tough. In my opinion, Santos and Flamengo are the two best teams in Brazil. Coming back to level the score after trailing by two goals against such an opponent is significant for us."
Speaking about his return from injury, Neymar added, "I had to be careful with my body. I didn't want to put excessive strain on my right leg, so I played a bit more cautiously than usual in certain situations. However, I am very happy to be back on the pitch and able to help the team."
