North Korean athlete breaks three world records in a single event.
Bangla Press Desk: Ri Song-gum secured North Korea's first gold medal at the Asian Games by setting three world records in the women's 49kg category in Nagoya on Wednesday.
With this feat, she joined an elite group of only four weightlifters to have won gold medals at three consecutive Asian Games. Ri had previously won gold at the Jakarta and Hangzhou editions as well.
Ri set her first world record by lifting 94kg in the snatch event, surpassing the previous record of 93kg by one kilogram.
She then broke the world record in the clean and jerk twice—lifting 116kg and subsequently 121kg.
In total, she lifted 215kg, shattering the previous world record by a margin of seven kilograms.
India's Mirabai Chanu, a silver medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, finally secured an Asian Games medal on her third attempt; she lifted a total of 198kg (87kg in snatch and 111kg in clean and jerk). Meanwhile, Indonesia's Diana Tri Wijayana won the bronze medal with a total lift of 191kg (88kg in snatch and 103kg in clean and jerk).
Ri made history as the fourth weightlifter—and the first woman—to win three consecutive gold medals in weightlifting at the Asian Games. She joins a list that includes Iran's Mohammad Nassiri (1966–74), South Korea's Kim Tae-hyun (1990–98), and Iran's Behdad Salimi (2010–18), all of whom also won three consecutive golds. However, no one has yet managed to win four consecutive gold medals.
