One sentenced to death, two to life imprisonment 11 years after murder

Bangla Press Desk:  A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced Robin alias “Tera Robin” to death in a case over the killing of a man named Sohel nearly 11 years ago in the Jurain area of the capital. The court also sentenced two other convicts, Ripon and Masud, to life imprisonment.

Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Khorshed Alam delivered the verdict, bench assistant Milon Hossain confirmed.

In addition to the death sentence, Robin was also fined Tk1 lakh, with one year of simple imprisonment in default. Ripon and Masud were each fined Tk2 lakh, with two years of simple imprisonment in default.

Among the convicts, Robin was in custody and was produced before the court during the pronouncement of the verdict. As Ripon and Masud have been absconding, the court issued warrants of conviction along with arrest warrants against them.

Two other accused in the case were acquitted as the charges against them could not be proven. They are “Piarir Pola Robin” alias Robin-2 and Tanvir.

According to the case documents, Sohel worked at a tailoring shop in Keraniganj. His mother, Sufia Begum, kept him in “safe custody” for about five months due to his involvement in “immoral activities.” He was released on 10 September 2015.

Later, Robin and others allegedly proposed that Sohel engage in criminal activities once again. When he refused, they began threatening him.

Robin, on 19 September, premeditatedly shot Sohel in the forehead and stabbed him to ensure his death before fleeing, after taking him to the rooftop of a one-storey house in the Rishipara area of the capital.

Sufia Begum, the victim's mother, filed a murder case with Kadamtali Police Station on the same day following the incident. Police submitted a charge sheet against five accused on 31 January 2017, and the court framed the charges on 9 February 2020. The court recorded the testimony of 19 witnesses during the trial.
