Permanent embankments will be built in coastal areas: Home Minister
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed spoke after distributing relief to flood victims in Pekua.
Bangla Press Desk: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the government has taken a long-term plan to rehabilitate the victims of the recent floods. He said that in addition to providing housing assistance to the homeless, necessary steps are also being taken to overcome the losses of farmers, fish farmers and livestock farmers. At the same time, initiatives have been taken to build permanent and sustainable embankments in coastal areas.
He said these things while speaking as the chief guest at a program to distribute house construction materials to families homeless in the floods organized by Alhaj Shamsul Haque Foundation at Pekua Upazila premises in Cox's Bazar on Saturday.
The Home Minister said that the main goal of BNP's politics is to ensure the welfare of the people. As a government elected by the people's votes, it is the moral responsibility of the government to stand by the people in their happiness and sorrow. He said that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's directive is - 'Bangladesh first, people before power'. Keeping that policy in mind, the government has stood by the people affected by the disaster. He also said that strong permanent embankments will be built to reduce the damage caused by repeated floods and tidal waves in the coastal areas. In addition, initiatives have been taken to activate the sluice gates that have been closed for a long time to resolve internal waterlogging.
Chittagong-9 MP Abu Sufian and Alhaj Shamsul Haque Foundation Chairman Mohammad Nasir Uddin spoke at the event. In the first phase, 20 families who lost their homes in the flood in Pekua were given necessary household items including tin, cots, blankets and mattresses. The foundation announced that it would provide similar assistance to 80 more families in phases.
Meanwhile, the Home Minister visited various flood-affected areas of Pekua and the newly formed Matamuhuri Upazila throughout the day. During this time, he distributed relief in Mehernama, Shilkhali, Barbakia Bazar, Toitong and Rajakhali areas. Later, he visited Sonali Bazar Sluice Gate in Ujantia and the embankment of Matamuhuri River in Konakhali Union of Matamuhuri Upazila. He also inquired about the affected people of BMchar, Purba Boro Bheola and Saharbil Union and distributed relief materials among them.
