Same Bedtime, Different Wake-Up Times: How Does It Affect Your Body?

Bangla Press Desk: Even if you go to bed at the same time every night, waking up at different times each morning can affect your body’s natural rhythm. Along with getting enough sleep, maintaining a consistent schedule for going to bed and waking up is important for overall health.

Irregular sleep schedules can lead to daytime fatigue, difficulty concentrating and changes in appetite.

In a report published in the lifestyle section of Indian news outlet Hindustan Times, Dr Divya Gopal, additional director at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, explained how irregular sleep timing can affect the body.

Impact on the Body’s Internal Clock

The human body follows a natural 24-hour biological cycle known as the circadian rhythm. It helps regulate various processes, including sleep and wake times, hormone release, body temperature, metabolism and alertness.

If wake-up times vary significantly from day to day, the body’s internal clock may become misaligned with daily activities. For example, waking up at 6am on working days but at 9am or 10am on weekends can disrupt the body’s natural rhythm.

Daytime Fatigue and Drowsiness

An inconsistent sleep schedule can cause daytime fatigue, drowsiness and a lack of motivation. Even if the total amount of sleep is sufficient, irregular sleep and wake times may leave the body feeling less refreshed.

This can make it harder to maintain concentration at work and stay active throughout the day.

Changes in Mood and Appetite

Sleep is linked to hormones that regulate hunger, feelings of fullness and stress. Frequently changing wake-up times can affect appetite and eating habits. Some people may experience stronger cravings for sweets or high-calorie foods. Mood fluctuations may also occur.

Long-Term Health Risks May Increase

Irregular sleep patterns have been associated with obesity, problems with blood glucose regulation and various metabolic and cardiovascular risks. However, an inconsistent wake-up time does not necessarily mean a person will develop these conditions. There is also insufficient experimental evidence to establish that such irregularities directly cause these diseases.

Waking up later than usual occasionally is generally not a cause for concern. However, regularly experiencing substantial variations in wake-up times may be a sign that it is worth paying closer attention to sleep habits.

How to Maintain a Healthy Sleep Routine

To maintain a healthy sleep rhythm, it is advisable to wake up at roughly the same time every day, including weekends. The recommended difference between wake-up times on working days and days off is 30 to 60 minutes.

Adults should aim to get at least seven hours of sleep each night on a regular basis. Maintaining consistency in sleep timing is equally important.

Healthy sleep depends not only on when you go to bed but also on when you wake up. Keeping sleep and wake times as consistent as possible can help maintain the body’s natural biological rhythm.
