Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh's Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) has warned of possible short-term flooding in seven districts next week as heavy to very heavy rainfall in upstream areas is expected to raise water levels in several northern rivers.
In a flood advisory issued on Friday, the centre said the flood situation in Sylhet is likely to remain stable, while parts of northern Bangladesh may face fresh flooding between 19 and 23 July.
Sardar Uday Raihan, Executive Engineer of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre under the Bangladesh Water Development Board, said rising water levels in the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers could trigger short-term flooding in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha and Kurigram districts.
According to the FFWC, water levels in the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers are expected to continue rising over the next three days, with some sections likely to flow above the danger level. As a result, low-lying areas of the five northern districts may experience temporary flooding.
The centre also warned that the Brahmaputra-Jamuna River may flow near the warning level at several points in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur and Bogura districts, potentially inundating adjacent low-lying areas.
Meanwhile, the flood situation along the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in the low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts is expected to remain stable over the next 24 hours.
The warning comes after days of persistent heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides that have severely affected parts of southeastern and northeastern Bangladesh. Although flood conditions have improved over the past three days, authorities remain on alert for renewed flooding in the north. Source: daily sun
