Silent ban clouds NCL as several players barred
Bangla Press Desk: The “silent ban” is becoming a reality within Bangladesh cricket. In February, following corruption allegations in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) formed a three-member independent inquiry committee led by former justice Mirza Hussain Haider. Last month, the three-member investigation committee submitted its primary report to the BCB regarding several high-profile players. While the comprehensive report is expected in late September, the board has quietly decided not to allow several players to feature in domestic competitions until they receive clearance from the follow-up findings. In effect, this might sideline some senior cricketers from local cricket despite no official suspension or sanction being announced. On Sunday, the silent ban theory became a reality as all the National Cricket League T20 captains’ names were announced through the NCL T20 official Facebook page, except for one team – Barishal Division. It was learned that a seasoned Barishal player, who represented Bangladesh in 40 matches across formats, was supposed to captain his division. But the BCB has other plans for him. When asked why Barishal’s captain had not been announced, a BCB official shared the details. “Some of stuff’s going on and you guys are well aware of those things I guess,” he told Daily Sun. “There is an issue with the investigation; the board is looking into it. We might get an instruction soon. And for now, as replacement we are thinking about national team left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam as Barishal captain,” the official added. Another board official confirmed the development. “We decided not to let them take part in any of our domestic cricket until they get clearance,” the official said.
A day before the official launch, the organizers announced the names of the team captains. BCB re-vealed the names through separate posts on social media platform Facebook. As he is not part of the Asia Cup squad, Najmul Hossain Shanto will feature in the NCL T20 from the very beginning and will lead Rajshahi. Continuing from previous seasons, Akbar Ali will once again captain Rangpur. Mohammad Mithun, who was appointed as the new president of the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) last Thursday, has been given the responsibility of leading Khulna. Nurul Hasan Sohan had been the side’s captain for several years, but this time he is away with the Asia Cup squad. Last season’s highest run-scorer, Mohammad Naim Sheikh, will captain Dhaka Metro. Consistent performer Mahidul Islam Bhuiyan Ankon will lead Dhaka Division. Meanwhile, left-handed opener Zakir Hasan will captain Sylhet, while Chattogram will be led by Yasir Ali Chowdhury. There have also been some changes in the coaching panels. Former national skipper Mohammad Ashraful has been appointed head coach of Barishal, with Shahin Hossain as his assistant. Dhaka Division will be guided by head coach Mizanur Rahman and assistant coach Rezaul Islam Rajon. Former national pacer Nazmul Hossain will serve as head coach of Dhaka Metro, assisted by Jahangir Alam. Rangpur’s coaching staff includes Saiful Islam Khan as head coach and Nazimuddin as assistant. Rajin Saleh will continue as Sylhet’s head coach, with Robiul Islam as his deputy. For Rajshahi, Abdul Karim Jewel will take charge as head coach, assisted by Salauddin Ahmed. Chattogram’s coaching panel features Mahbub Ali Zaki as head coach and Masum Uddoula Chowdhury as as-sistant. Khulna will be coached by Tushar Imran, supported by former left-arm pacer Syed Rasel.
On the opening day (14 September), in Rajshahi, the hosts will take on last season’s runners-up Dhaka Metro in the morning game starting at 9:30 am. Later the same day in Bogura, defending champions Rangpur will face Sylhet in the afternoon fixture at 1:30 pm. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
