Bangla Press Desk: The “silent ban” is becoming a reality within Bangladesh cricket.
In February, following corruption allegations in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) formed a three-member independent inquiry committee led by former justice Mirza Hussain Haider. Last month, the three-member investigation committee submitted its primary report to the BCB regarding several high-profile players. While the comprehensive report is expected in late September, the board has quietly decided not to allow several players to feature in domestic competitions until they receive clearance from the follow-up findings.
In effect, this might sideline some senior cricketers from local cricket despite no official suspension or sanction being announced. On Sunday, the silent ban theory became a reality as all the National Cricket League T20 captains’ names were announced through the NCL T20 official Facebook page, except for one team – Barishal Division. It was learned that a seasoned Barishal player, who represented Bangladesh in 40 matches across formats, was supposed to captain his division. But the BCB has other plans for him.
When asked why Barishal’s captain had not been announced, a BCB official shared the details. “Some of stuff’s going on and you guys are well aware of those things I guess,” he told Daily Sun. “There is an issue with the investigation; the board is looking into it. We might get an instruction soon. And for now, as replacement we are thinking about national team left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam as Barishal captain,” the official added. Another board official confirmed the development. “We decided not to let them take part in any of our domestic cricket until they get clearance,” the official said.
