Bangla Press Desk:  Former Australian umpire Simon Taufel has been appointed as the consultant of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) umpires’ education department. The announcement was made by BCB umpires committee chairman Iftekhar Rahman Mithu on Saturday in Mirpur. Bangladeshi ICC Elite Panel umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat has been named the head of the department. Taufel confirmed that he signed a two-year contract. “I'm humbled to be part of that process going forward for the next couple of years. I’m here to help create a better environment for umpires and referees to grow, develop, and improve Bangladesh cricket,” he said. He will begin his work with the upcoming National Cricket League (NCL) T20 starting on 14 September.
“Watching the NCL will give me insight into the performances of 30 match officials and how the system can be improved,” he added. Taufel also praised Saikat: “He’s a role model of resilience and determination, an example for male and female umpires alike.” Reflecting on his BCCI experience, he said, “Having worked with the BCCI system for 10 years plus previously, we saw a long period where there wasn't an elite panel umpire from India. S. Ravi was one of those people who came through that system, followed by Nitin Menon. It takes 10 years to become an overnight success.” Saikat expressed his admiration for Taufel.
“I made my ODI debut alongside him. He has been my inspiration in umpire education. We’ve made progress, but with Simon I hope we can produce more elite umpires. There are no shortcuts — it takes time, resilience, and a change in mindset,” he concluded. This article was originally published on Daily Sun. [Bangla Press is a global platform for free thought.
