The sacks of evidence against Javed
Bangla Press Desk:  A Chattogram court on Sunday ordered the issuance of an INTERPOL red notice for former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed and his wife Rukmila Zaman, hours after a major Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) operation that recovered 23 sacks of documents linked to the couple’s alleged foreign assets and money laundering activities. The development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing investigation into Javed’s finan-cial dealings abroad. Acting Senior Chattogram Metropolitan Special Judge Md Abdur Rahman passed the order on a petition filed by the ACC, which has accused the former minister and his wife in multiple cor-ruption cases. ACC Public Prosecutor Mokarram Hossain confirmed that the court approved the plea following a hearing on Sunday.
The ACC had submitted the request for an INTERPOL red notice on 18 September, highlighting the couple’s alleged involvement in siphoning off millions of taka abroad during Javed’s tenure as minister in 2019-2020.Earlier, on 24 July, ACC Deputy Director Md Moshiur Rahman filed a case with its Chattogram Integrated District Office-1, implicating 31 individuals, including Javed, Rukmila, former chair-man of United Commercial Bank Ltd (UCBL), their siblings, and several company officials and employees. According to the case statement, the former minister and his family opened five companies in the names of Aramit Group officials to secure Tk25 crore in loans from UCBL, which were allegedly misappropriated abroad. The ACC’s recent seizure came during a raid at the residence of Md Elias Talukdar, Rukmila’s driver, in Shikalbaha under Karnaphuli upazila. The 23 sacks of documents contain records of property acquisitions abroad, rent collection, bill payments, and other financial transactions.
An initial review suggests that the assets may extend beyond the United Kingdom, United States, Singapore, and Dubai, to India, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Cambodia. Officials noted that the documents had been moved multiple times: originally taken from Aramit Group’s Kalurghat industrial facility on 16 September, shifted to Elias’s residence, and later to his cousin Osman Talukdar’s home, before their seizure on Sunday.ACC investigators warned that the volume of material is extensive and will require significant time for a thorough examination, after which findings will be submitted to the commission’s headquarters for further action. Allegations about Javed’s overseas wealth first emerged ahead of last year’s national election, resulting in his exclusion from the subsequent cabinet. According to the ACC head office, he is under investigation for money laundering and acquiring property abroad, with six previous cases accusing him of embezzling Tk1.24 billion.
Last Wednesday, a new case was filed against Javed, Rukmila, and eight others on charges in-cluding accumulation of illegal wealth, bribery, and money laundering.Following that case, ACC officials launched an operation in Chattogram’s Double Mooring area on Wednesday night, arresting two close associates of the former minister: Utpal Pal, AGM of accounts at Aramit, and Abdul Aziz, AGM and owner of Imperial Trading, which borrowed from several banks. Utpal is described as Javed’s designated officer in charge of overseas assets. Both are currently on a five-day remand. Javed fled to London with his wife and family members on 5 August last year, following the fall of the Awami League government amid a mass uprising.  This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
