U-21 success spurs new coach, leagues, and awards

Bangla Press Desk:  Bangladesh’s U-21 hockey team made a remarkable debut at the FIH U21 Hockey World Cup in Tamil Nadu, India, finishing 17th and clinching the Challengers Trophy in their maiden appearance. The young side impressed with discipline, attacking flair, and strong teamwork, heralding a new era for Bangladesh hockey.

Following the tournament, the players have expressed a strong desire to stay active in competitive hockey to maintain their form and momentum.

Bangladesh Hockey Federation General Secretary Lt. Col. (Retd.) Riazul Hasan, speaking from Madurai, emphasised the importance of the four-month pre-tournament camp but noted that fitness is ultimately the players’ responsibility.

“No player becomes fit simply by attending a camp. Shorter, periodic camps help refine skills and tactics, but players must sustain their own fitness,” he said.

The federation plans to appoint a new coach for the squad, focusing on skill development, game strategies, and nurturing future talent. While some current players may continue, a new U21 team will also be formed.

“We will hold meetings after returning home to finalise plans. Our goal is continuity and preparing the next generation,” Hasan explained.

The federation aims to strengthen domestic competition, including leagues, which players see as crucial for match readiness. However, logistical and financial challenges have limited widespread club support.

“We have participated in seven international tournaments over the past year, but unless clubs actively engage, players bear the burden. The federation cannot fund all club activities alone,” he said.

Discussions are also underway regarding awards and honours to recognise the U21 team’s historic achievement.
