Wellalage learns of father's death after Asia Cup match
Bangla Press Desk:  Sri Lanka spinner Dunith Wellalage’s father, Suranga Wellalage, died of a heart attack on Thursday. Dunith was representing Sri Lanka in their Asia Cup 2025 group-stage match against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi when he was informed of his father’s passing. Former cricketer and broadcaster Russell Arnold confirmed the news on air after Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan in their final group-stage fixture on Thursday. Sri Lankan media also reported that Dunith was told of the death shortly after Sri Lanka completed their chase of 170 late in the evening. A photograph of the team manager consoling Dunith, with his arm around him, was shared by Sri Lankan journalist Damith Weerasinghe.
“Dunith Wellalage’s father, Suranga, passed away just a while ago. He played a bit of cricket too. You know how big our school cricket scene is. He captained Prince of Wales College when I captained my school, St Peter’s,” Arnold said while commentating. “Quite sad to hear that. The news has been broken to Dunith just a while ago. And our condolences with the family. The celebrations will be muted. The team is a tight place, the dressing room. Hopefully, this bonds them and helps them go on and do well in the Super 4 stage,” he added. It was a deeply emotional moment for the Sri Lankan team, coming immediately after they sealed their place in the Super 4 stage. Sri Lanka outclassed Afghanistan, chasing 170 in the 19th over, with Kusal Mendis scoring an unbeaten 74 and Kamindu Mendis contributing a brisk 28. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
