Why do frequent headaches occur? Find out the possible causes.

Bangla Press Desk: Headaches can arise from various causes, such as mental stress, catching a cold, or exposure to extreme heat. However, doctors point out that eye-related issues can also be a trigger. Do not mistakenly attribute such headaches solely to migraines or stress; there could be an underlying, significant eye problem.

The eyes are often the root cause of headaches. Because the eyes are intricately linked to the nervous system, any excessive strain placed on them can lead to head pain—which may subsequently spread to the neck and back.

Eye-related conditions that can cause headaches:

1. Vision/Refractive Errors: Conditions such as astigmatism, difficulty seeing distant objects, or presbyopia (age-related vision changes, typically occurring after age 40) force the internal eye muscles to work harder than usual. This results in persistent pain across the forehead and above the eyebrows.

2. Convergence Insufficiency: When reading or looking at a screen, both eyes must turn inward. If the eye muscles lack proper coordination, the brain has to work extra hard to fuse two blurred images, leading to pain behind the eyes.

3. Digital Eye Strain: Staring continuously at a laptop or mobile screen reduces the frequency of blinking—from the normal 15–20 times per minute to just 5–7 times. This causes the eyes to become dry, often resulting in an intense headache by the end of the day.

4. Glaucoma: A sudden spike in intraocular pressure can cause excruciating pain in the temples and the eye sockets. This may be accompanied by symptoms such as nausea or the appearance of colored halos around light sources.

How to determine if your headache originates from your eyes:

If the headache begins in the afternoon or evening, or after prolonged periods of reading or working on a laptop.

If the pain is primarily localized around the eyes, behind the eyes, or between the eyebrows.

If you find relief by resting with your eyes closed in a dark room for 30 minutes. One should be cautious if a headache is accompanied by symptoms such as blurred vision, a burning sensation in the eyes, or a stiff neck.

In such cases, it is essential to consult a qualified ophthalmologist to have your eye muscle coordination, refractive errors, corneal health, and intraocular pressure evaluated.
