Zakir and Maria Shine in Notun Kuri 100m Sprint Finals

Bangla Press Desk: Zakir Hossain and Maria emerged as the boys and girls' 100-metre sprint champions of Notun Kuri Sports at the Army Stadium on Monday. 

The two popular events of athletics were held in front of the Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who was the chief guest of the closing ceremony.

Both of them had the best timing in the heat the previous day. They were the favourites in the fight to be the best in the final as well. And so it proved to be.

Maria from Dhaka surpassed everyone. She won the heat in 13.82 seconds.

She improved her timing to win the final in 13.75 seconds. She was challenged a bit by Sylhet's Tisha Akhter and Khulna's Adhara Oishee. Tisha came second, finishing the sprint in 14.25 seconds. And Oishee took 14.62 seconds to finish third.

In the boys' 100m sprint, Zakir of Khulna showed absolute dominance in this event. The previous day, he finished the race in 11.50 seconds on the track of the National Stadium and became the best in the heat.

This time, he improved his timing further in the final. Zakir finished the race in 11.15 seconds. The remaining seven could not challenge Zakir in this event. Rangpur's Ziyad Hasan came second with a time of 11.20 seconds and Rajshahi's Suman Sheikh came third with a time of 11.40 seconds.
