1 killed in clashes over Nural Pagla’s controversial shrine at Rajbari
Bangla Press Desk: At least one person has succumbed to his injuries following clashes between “Tawhidi Janata” and the followers of late Nural Pagla, who during his lifetime allegedly claimed to be Imam Mahdi and God, in Rajbari on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Rasel Molla, 28, a service member at Nural's shrine, and a resident of Jhut Mistrir Para in Goalanda upzila, confirmed Rajbari Additional Police Superintendent Md Sharif Al Razi. Rasel was undergoing treatment at the Faridpur Medical College Hospital at the time of his death. Goalanda UNO Nahidur Rahman said authorities were still trying to confirm the exact number and nature of casualties.
However, even before the clashes erupted, a group vandalised vehicles of the UNO and police following Friday prayers, Nahidur confirmed. Later, they stormed Nurul Pagla’s house and shrine, initiating the clashes that left at least 100 injured. The group of about a hundred people reportedly broke off from the main protest group, which assumed the title "Iman-Aqeedah Rokkha Committee," and ignored the calls for calm made by protest leaders, including Islamic scholars and local BNP leaders. The splinter group inflicted violence, while the main group of Islamic devotees continued their peaceful demonstration at Goalanda Ansar Club field, eyewitnesses told reporters. Later, the arsonists alleged Nurul Pagla’s followers suddenly attacked their procession towards the shrine with sharp weapons and brickbats. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
