Bangla Press Desk: Cloudbursts and landslides have unleashed fresh misery across the hill states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Assam, leaving at least 20 people dead, 20 missing and hundreds stranded.
The fresh bout of heavy rain this week caused rivers to overflow their banks, while cascading landslides flattened homes, blocked roads and swallowed vehicles in scenes of devastation, even as people picked up the pieces from last month’s flood fury.
In Uttarakhand, where the skies opened up overnight, 15 people were killed and 16 remain unaccounted for, state officials said. More than 900 people were stranded at different locations before being rescued by NDRF, SDRF and fire brigade teams, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre.
Torrential waters battered Dehradun district hardest. Thirteen people died in the state capital, including eight residents of Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad district who drowned after their tractor-trolley was swept away by River Tons in Vikasnagar. Yogi Adityanath announced Rs 2 lakh in compensation for the families of the deceased.
