20km slow traffic on Dhaka–Tangail Highway ahead of Eid

Bangla Press Desk:  With only two days left before Eid-ul-Fitr, homebound people are returning to their villages to celebrate the festival with family and loved ones.

As a result, pressure on highways has increased. Due to the increased number of vehicles, slow traffic has been reported over a 20-kilometre stretch from the Jamuna Bridge to the Rabna Bypass on the Dhaka–Tangail highway, causing suffering for drivers and passengers.On Thursday morning, visits to different points of the Dhaka–Tangail Jamuna Bridge highway, including Elenga bus station, Rabna Bypass, and Ashakpur Bypass, showed that passengers are travelling not only by bus but also by trucks, pickups, and microbuses, often risking their lives. 

Besides, more private cars and motorcycles were seen on the highway than buses. Many passengers are using rented motorcycles and private cars for transportation. Due to vehicle shortages and increased fares, many are travelling in open trucks and pickups.

Meanwhile, the Jamuna Bridge Authority said that 51,584 vehicles crossed the bridge in 24 hours from midnight Tuesday to midnight Wednesday. Of these, 32,840 vehicles were heading towards northern regions, generating toll revenue of Tk 19,710,650.

On the other hand, 18,744 vehicles travelled towards Dhaka, generating toll revenue of Tk 15,471,950. Compared to the previous day, 4,641 more vehicles crossed the bridge on Wednesday.
