4 ADSM activists placed on remand over extortion charge
Bangla Press Desk:   A Dhaka court on Sunday placed four leaders and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM) on a seven-day remand in connection with an alleged extortion incident at the Gulshan residence of former Awami League lawmaker Shammi Ahmed. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman passed the order after police produced the accused before the court and sought a 10-day remand for interrogation. The accused placed on remand are Abdur Razzak Riyad, acting convener of the central committee of ADSM’s combined private university unit; Ibrahim Hossain, convener of ADSM’s Dhaka city unit; and ADSM members Sakadoun Siam and Sadab. The court also granted police custody of another accused, Md Aminul Islam. Earlier in the day, Siddique Abu Zafar, husband of ex-lawmaker Shammi Ahmed, filed the case with Gulshan Police Station. The complaint named six ADSM leaders and members and mentioned 10 to 12 unidentified individuals.
According to the case statement, on the morning of 17 July, accused Abdur Razzak Riyad and Kazi Gaurab Apu went to the residence of former MP Shammi Ahmed in Gulshan, where they allegedly issued threats and demanded Tk50 lakh and gold ornaments. When the complainant refused to comply, they reportedly labelled him a collaborator of the Awami League and threatened to have him arrested using police pressure. Under duress, complainant Siddique Abu Zafar claimed he gave them Tk5 lakh in cash and borrowed another Tk5 lakh from his brother to meet their demand. On the night of 19 July, Riyad and Apu allegedly returned to the residence and forcefully knocked on the complainant’s apartment door. Zafar informed Gulshan police, after which the accused fled. Later, on 26 July, Riyad and other accused individuals reportedly showed up again at the residence, asking for the complainant. The building guard alerted Zafar by phone, and the group allegedly issued further threats—warning that if the remaining Tk40 lakh was not paid, they would have him arrested.
Following the second complaint, police arrived at the scene and arrested five of the accused, while Kazi Gaurab Apu managed to flee . This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
