Bangla Press Desk: A Dhaka court has granted remand for two suspects arrested in connection with the brutal killing of a scrap trader near Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka.
The two accused — Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, 41, named as the prime suspect, and Tarek Rahman Robin, 22, were placed on different durations of remand following a hearing at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Judge Jewel Rana yesterday.
Court Officer Abul Kalam Azad of the Kotwali Police Station confirmed the development to The Business Standard today (11 July). "Police had requested 10 days' remand in the murder case and 5 days in a related arms case," the officer said. "After hearing arguments from both the prosecution and the defence — the latter seeking bail and cancellation of the remand plea — the court granted 5 days of remand for Mahin in the murder case and 2 days for Robin in the arms case," he added. The incident occurred on the evening of 9 July around 6 PM, when Sohag was beaten to death with bricks and stones in the premises of Mitford Hospital. Shocking footage of the attack — showing continued brutality on his body even after death — went viral on social media, sparking public outrage. Sohag, the victim, son of Yusuf Ali Hawlader, was a resident of Purbo Namabari village in Keraniganj. He had been running a scrap business in Rani Ghosh Lane of Old Dhaka for many years. Two separate cases — one for murder and another under the Arms Act — have been filed with the Kotwali Police Station. Law enforcers have so far arrested four individuals. Police arrested Mohin and Robin, while Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Alamgir (28) and Monir (32). This article was originally published on The Business Standard.
