4 including BNP leader arrested over attack on Patgram police
Bangla Press Desk: Police and RAB arrested four suspects, including a BNP grassroots leader, early Friday, hours after a group of miscreants attacked the Patgram Police Station in Lalmonirhat, to free two “comrades” being held behind bars on extortion charges. Many of the attackers were local BNP activists, alleged Patgram Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman. The four arrestees were unnamed accused in the case filed over the incident that left eight police personnel injured, two critically. Later, the Hatibandha Police Station, located near the Patgram Police Station, filed a separate lawsuit against 27 people, including people associated with BNP, for preventing additional personnel from reaching the officers being attacked at Patgram. BNP members have denied both the accusations, saying the party will not take the responsibility of anyone trying to “pretend as activists of the party or its affiliated bodies.”
Nonetheless, the party has formed a three-member high-level committee to submit a probe report on the Patgram incident within three days, said BNP central executive committee member Barrister Hasan Rajib at a press briefing held at the party’s Patgram Upazila Unit office on Friday noon. "None will be spared if found involved in the Patgram incident," Barrister Hasan warned. According to police and locals, two individuals, Sohel Rana and Belal Hossain, were arrested for collecting extortion money from a stone-laden truck at Soreorbazar area in Patgram upazila on Thursday night. Police arrested them red-handed and a mobile court jailed them for a month. Sohel and Belal were allegedly linked to a stone quarry lessee and were violating regulations when extorting money from the truck drivers transporting stones for the quarry.
Patgram Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Uttam Kumar Das said the jailed people were collecting extortions, violating regulations. At 11.30pm, after Sohel and Belal were brought to the Patgram Police Station, a large group of around 200-250 people arrived there. There, they vandalized the chairs, tables, windows, doors, desk computers and laptops with sticks and brickbats. Police tried to stop them and sustained injuries in the process. The attackers forcibly snatched keys of the lock-ups and freed Sohel and Belal from custody. Later, police fired tear shell and rubber bullet, further aggravating the situation. Afterwards, additional police, RAB and army personnel reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
Siege at Hatibandha Hatibandha Police Station officers claimed riders on 70-80 motorbikes prevented them from leaving the station to help fellow personnel at Patgram. About 40 minutes later, the group, including leaders from BNP affiliates Krishak Dal, Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal, left the spot, police said. A criminal case has been filed for “obstructing police from performing their duties, staging an illegal blockade, and issuing threats.” As per the case statement, the accused pushed officers, hurled expletives and tried to prevent them from leaving the Hatibandha Police Station around 11.30pm Thursday, when the personnel were responding to a distress call from colleagues at the Patgram Police Station.
