ACC sues Shamim Osman, wife for acquiring illegal assets
Bangla Press Desk: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed two separate cases against former lawmaker from the Narayanganj-4 constituency, Shamim Osman, and his wife, Salma Osman, on charges of amassing undeclared wealth. The commission has also ordered their son and daughter to submit their statements of assets. ACC Director General (Prevention) Akhtar Hossain disclosed the development while speaking to reporters at the commission’s headquarters in Dhaka on Tuesday. In the first case, Shamim Osman has been accused of abusing his power to acquire undeclared assets worth Tk6.68 crore. He has also been charged with making unusual transactions totalling Tk439.82 crore through nine bank accounts.
The anti-graft body filed the second case against both Shamim Osman and his wife, Salma Osman, for allegedly acquiring undeclared assets worth Tk3.96 crore. The ACC also reported suspicious transactions amounting to Tk24.66 crore in eight of Salma Osman’s bank accounts. Akhtar Hossain said the commission has also found preliminary evidence of illegal asset accumulation by Shamim Osman’s son, Imtinan Osman, and daughter, Labiba Zoha Angana. The siblings have been ordered to submit their asset declarations under Section 26(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2004. The ACC first launched an investigation against Shamim Osman in 2007 on charges of concealing assets and accumulating illegal wealth, but the probe remained stalled for an extended period. Following the change in power after the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in August 2024, the ACC resumed the investigation.
A special branch of the commission scrutinised his bank transactions and assets, which led to the filing of the cases. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
