An ‘inconclusive’ decision and a heartbreak for Tigresses

Bangla Press Desk: Heather Knight had already started walking off the field the moment Shorna Akter dived forward and appeared to take the catch cleanly. Bangladesh players, including bowler Fahima Khatun, burst into celebration — believing they had just taken a big step toward a historic win against England.

But the joy was short-lived. On-field umpires Claire Polosak and Vrinda Rathi referred the decision to third umpire Gayathri Venugopalan.

After a lengthy review, the verdict came: “Inconclusive.”

The ball had seemingly brushed the ground before settling into Shorna’s hands, and the available angles were not clear enough to confirm a clean catch. The benefit of doubt went to the batter — Heather Knight, then on 13 off 38 in the 15th over.

Knight returned to the crease and went on to craft a match-winning 79 not out off 111 balls, guiding England to a four-wicket victory over Bangladesh at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday. It was another missed chance for the Tigresses to script their first-ever ODI win against England.

“I thought it was out; obviously, that was overturned. So, I certainly had a little bit of luck today (Tuesday), but probably the year I've had, I kind of deserved a little bit of luck. So, sort of just tried to ride that and tried to really make it count,” Knight said after the match.

For Bangladesh, it was a moment of heartbreak. Leg-spinner Fahima Khatun, who picked up three wickets and created multiple chances, expressed her disappointment.

“This is very sad. We were very sure that it was an out, and we appealed accordingly, and we became upset a bit when the out was not given after being out. Heather Knight's wicket was very important at that time. The scenario of the game could have been different if that wicket had been given,” she said.

That wasn’t the only blow. In the seventh over, Marufa Akter’s sharp inswinger struck Knight on the pad, but the on-field LBW decision was overturned on review. A few overs earlier, another caught-behind appeal against Knight had also gone Bangladesh’s way initially, only to be reversed after the faint contact was deemed “inconclusive.”

“It's the first time I'm given out three times in an innings and had them overturned, that's for sure,” Knight later reflected. “Yeah. Look, it was a case of just refocusing. Obviously, I knew I didn't hit the ball and, yes, it's tricky conditions... that's the joy of DRS, isn't it?”

Adding to Bangladesh’s woes, Marufa — who had bowled a brilliant first spell of 5-0-28-2 — couldn’t bowl again after suffering cramps while fielding. “We didn't play looking at who's a big team or small team. We played them as an opponent. Now, what was not in our hands, I have nothing to say about that,” Fahima said.

A mix of unfortunate calls, missed chances, and injury setbacks overshadowed Bangladesh’s gritty effort — from Sobhana Mostary’s maiden World Cup fifty to Rabeya Khan’s late cameo. Bangladesh fell short defending 178, but their determination left a mark. On another day, with a little less “inconclusiveness,” it could well have been a historic win.
