Appel, ex-Chhatra League leader, remanded for three day
Bangla Press Desk: A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand for the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League’s former leader, Appel Mahmud, in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Shahbagh Police Station in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid passed the order on Wednesday following a petition filed by the investigating officer of the case.
On 6 March, police arrested Appel Mahmud in Gulistan’s Golap Shah Mazar area. He was sent to jail the following day.
On the same day, Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Shahidur Rahman filed a petition, seeking a seven-day remand to interrogate him. The court fixed Wednesday for the hearing.
According to the complaint, around 6:45am on 6 March, 20-25 leaders and activists of the Awami League, its youth wing Jubo League, and the banned Chhatra League were chanting provocative and anti-state slogans in front of the main gate of a mosque adjacent to Golap Shah Mazar under Shahbagh Police Station.
A team of Shahbagh police conducted a raid at the spot and arrested Appel, while others managed to escape.
During preliminary interrogation, it was revealed that the group gathered there to carry out acts of sabotage, create panic among the public, and spread propaganda against the government.
