Argentine coach Mario Gomez set to take charge of Bashundhara Kings
Bangla Press Desk:   Bangladesh Premier League giants Bashundhara Kings are set to appoint Argentine tactician Roberto Carlos Mario Gomez as their new head coach. The five-time league champions turned to Gomez after a verbal agreement with Brazilian coach Sergio Farias fell through earlier this month. A former defender in his playing days, Gomez spent much of his career at Argentine club Ferro Carril Oeste, winning two domestic league titles in 1982 and 1984. His coaching journey began in 1995 as assistant to Hector Cuper at Lanus before following him to Spain. Gomez was on the bench at Mallorca from 1997 to 1999, helping the club reach both the Copa del Rey and UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup finals. Later, he spent two seasons at Valencia, where the side played consecutive UEFA Champions League finals, boasting stars such as Gaizka Mendieta, Pablo Aimar, Claudio Lopez, Samuel Eto’o and Santiago Canizares.
In 2001, Gomez joined Cuper at Serie A giants Inter Milan, gaining first-hand experience with global icons like Ronaldo Nazario, Christian Vieri, Hernan Crespo and Javier Zanetti. After his time in Europe’s elite dugouts, Gomez stepped into head coaching roles across Argentina with clubs including Lanus, Quilmes, Belgrano, Atletico Tucumán, Ferro, Gimnasia La Plata and Gimnasia Jujuy. His overseas coaching resume spans Greece’s Asteras Tripolis, Ecuador’s Deportivo Cuenca, Hong Kong’s South China, Malaysia’s Johor Darul Ta’zim and several Indonesian clubs including Persib Bandung, Borneo FC and Arema FC. Now 68, Gomez brings with him a career decorated with success. He famously led Johor Darul Ta’zim to the 2015 AFC Cup title — the first Malaysian side ever to win a continental trophy — alongside a domestic treble of league, FA Cup and Charity Shield. His spell in Indonesian football also earned him acclaim for his tactical acumen and leadership. Bashundhara Kings, already the dominant force in Bangladesh football with five league crowns, are banking on Gomez’s international pedigree to elevate their ambitions. Last season, despite missing out on the league title, they lifted both the Independence Cup and Federation Cup.
This year, the Dhaka giants have set their sights even higher: sweeping all five domestic trophies and making a deep run in the AFC Challenge League. For that mission, they have entrusted the experienced Argentine coach Roberto Carlos Mario Gomez. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
