Awami League, whose activities are banned, will not be present in December: Home Minister
BanglaPress Desk: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has stated that even if the Awami League—whose activities have been banned—seeks to return to politics, the people of the country will not accept it.
He remarked, "The Awami League will not return in December. They are a banned political party. In truth, the Awami League was never a genuine political party, as the seeds of democracy were never part of their DNA. They functioned as an authoritarian, mafia-like force and have proven themselves to be a non-political entity. Ultimately, they were forced to flee in the face of a mass uprising."
He made these comments while speaking to journalists on Thursday (October 29) following the passing-out parade for the 27th batch of trainee sergeants and the 43rd batch of cadet sub-inspectors (SI-2026) at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi.
The Home Minister noted that, according to United Nations estimates, the Awami League is responsible for the killing of over 1,400 people in Bangladesh—a figure that government records place at more than 2,000. "They carried out genocide and massacres, killing innocent citizens of this country. Yet, to this day, they have neither offered an apology nor expressed any remorse."
He further added that the Awami League had attempted to label the students and citizens who participated in the mass uprising as "militants." Given this, he believes the public will not accept any attempt by the party to re-engage in politics through democratic processes.
Stating that the government is not concerned about a potential political comeback by the Awami League, the Home Minister said, "We are not troubled by who might wish to return to the country. The government is committed to establishing the rule of law. Should anyone return, necessary legal action will be taken against them in accordance with the law."
"We are steadfast in our commitment to upholding the rule of law in this country," the Home Minister emphasized. "No one has been spared—regardless of their background; even the children of Members of Parliament have been accused, arrested, and placed on remand. No one has been granted an exemption."
